news: circus in town
The Theater Project and Spindleworks are collaborating to produce Cirque du Monde, an ensemble circus. Four Theater Project performers and eight Spindleworks artists will produce this original circus at The Theater Project, June 27, 28 and 29.
Supported by a grant from The Maine Arts Commission, Cirque du Monde has been in the works since last fall. “It’s been a long, exciting, creative process that is still going on and is full of surprises,” Al Miller, The Theater Project’s Artistic Director, said. “All of us have explored and learned from each other and the learning and creating will likely continue through the final performance.”
Don Weatherbee, Jean Shaw, Jim Hall and Miller are the Theater Project performers. Miller and Liz McGhee, Spindleworks director, conceived the project last year and applied to The Maine Arts Commission for funding. McGhee and Miller, who have been quietly nurturing a Spindleworks – Theater Project collaboration for several years, both expressed delight at the Arts Commission’s support of Cirque du Monde
The Spindleworks ensemble comprises: Ellen Atkinson, Earl and Diane Black, Kim Christensen, Sam Eberhart, Anna McDougal, Nancy Scott and Lloyd Whitcomb. Cathy Worthington and Jonathan Price are working with Spindleworks artists to create costumes and props for the Cirque du Monde.
There will be trained horses, sword swallowing, juggling of many sorts, clowns, high wire walkers and riders, plus other feats of remarkable skill, all fitting into The Theater Project on School Street in Brunswick. Performances on Friday and Saturday begin at 7:30 in the evening. Sunday’s performance begins at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon.
For information and reservations call the box office at The Theater Project, 729-8584.
