ROME (WCSH6 - NEWS CENTER) -- It can be difficult for kids with developmental disabilities to fit in among their peers, especially when those disabilities affect speech.
Computer technology can help those who are non-verbal, though, and for 5 years, Camp Communication in Rome, Maine has been there to help young people learn how to use those computers to the fullest. The weekend-long camp serves those aged 8 through 20, along with their parents and caregivers.
When weather permits, campers can access water activities that are handicap accessible, and when it's raining, they can take part in things like drama and arts and crafts. As part of camp, parents and caregivers attend seminars that teach them how to help the young people learn how to use their devices better.
All along, the campers are not only learning how to communicate better. They're also seeing that there are other people out there just like them.
