September 11 / Guest Artist

The Theater Project presents Two Sides of the Classical Guitar, a classical/acoustic guitar concert featuring Brian Cullen and David Bullard.

Originally from South Africa, Brian Cullen has a classical guitar background from the London John Williams School of Music, and the Durban South Africa Classical Guitar Society. He plays classical, Latin and contemporary styles from around the globe.

Dave Bullard is more of a Dirt Road Scholar, and plays songs he has written from his years on the road, playing with people of all nationalities. He mixes styles of reggae and Latin salsa with flamenco and jazz.

Two Sides highlights the wonderful symbiotic relationship that Cullen and Bullard have as musicians. Each is an extraordinarily talented guitar player by himself, but together, the two players are able to deftly fill in the others musical spaces. The result is a show that ebbs and flows and never relinquishes your attention.

This special concert event will be presented Friday, September 11 at 8 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, and are available at 729-8584.

For more information, please contact Brian Cullen at 207-729-4361 or visit his website.

September 26 / Guest Artist

"The Marden's Lady" Arrives at The Theater Project

Hello theah, dearie - you might recognize the next performer at The Theater Project from her series of unforgettable television commercials. On Saturday, September 26 at 8 pm, The Theater Project proudly presents "An Evening With Birdie Googins...AKA: The Marden's Lady".

The actress who has brought Birdie to your living room the past few years is Karmo Sanders, who turns out to have a history at The Theater Project. In the late 1980's she performed in several plays there, including "What The Butler Saw", and "A Midsummer Night's Dream". She has since gone on to local celebrity as "The Marden's Lady". While Birdie likes to call herself "Maine's Own Supermodel", this quirky character should probably be labeled as an "Unregistered Maine Guide" as she points out the incredible humor in the lives of everyday Mainers.

"An Evening With Birdie Googins" will absolutely delight you with its kooky, over-the-top style. The show is a fun, interactive, audience participation filled festival. Don't miss the meet and greet afterwards where Birdie will be available for photos and autographs. You'll go home smiling - guaranteed!

Tickets are $10 and are available at 729-8584 or at The Theater Project box office at 14 School Street.

Photo: Birdie Googins...AKA The Mardens Lady
October 16 / Guest Artists

Film enthusiasts will gather at the Theater Project on Friday, October 16, 2009, at 7:30 P.M. for the first annual Brunswick Student Film Night. Featuring original films created by local students, the evening will include a screening, discussion with the filmmakers, and a reception.

“We’re excited to host this event, and pleased that the Theater Project can be the one to introduce the community to the work of these young filmmakers,” says Executive Director, Wendy Poole.

The films range from short animation to documentary to plot-twisting-psychodrama. The filmmaking techniques used and equipment available to the filmmakers ranged from a basic iMovie laptop program to the state-of-the-art Final Cut Pro. Friends and family stand in as actors, and Brunswick and its environs serve as the backdrop for many scenes.

"This is grassroots, living-room style creativity,” says Poole. “It’s the type of ‘from the heart’ artistic expression we encourage at the Theater Project.”

Several of the filmmakers featured are also Theater Project Young Company alumni/actors.

Participants include:

• Hannah Weddle, creator of “City of Dreams” and “Squirrel Encounters.” A 2006 graduate of Brunswick High School, Hannah is pursuing a degree at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, for a BFA in film and television production. During her time at Tisch, Hannah has focused on Animation Production, Sound Design and Screenwriting. She is a former honoree of the Maine Student Film and Video Festival, and has participated as a judge in that organization’s 2009 contest.

• Carl Elsaesser, creator of “Paradise Clause,” which was a winner in the Senior Division at the 2006 Maine Student Film and Video Festival. A graduate of Brunswick High School, Carl most recently worked for Florentine Films, which was founded by Ken Burns. He currently attends Hampshire College where he is studying film.

• Jasper Lowe, co-creator of “Recall,” which was the Grand Prize Winner in the 2009 Maine Student Film and Video Festival. Currently a senior at Brunswick High School, Jasper’s work was also recognized by the MSFVF in 2008 (a film called “When We Collide”) and he has participated in the Maine Media Workshop's Young Filmmakers program where his project was chosen for the final screening of notable works of the students. He hopes to study filmmaking in college.

• Ripley Swan, co-creator of “Recall". In addition to collaborating with Jasper (above) on several projects, including a promotional video for the Curtis Memorial Library, which they produced as a community service project, and a series of athletic videos of the BHS boys and girls lacrosse teams, Rippy became interested this past year in building movie-making equipment – most notably a dolly track, a steadicam, and an underwater camera box. He hopes to pursue his interests in film and engineering in college.

• Christian Schneider, creator of “The Invisible People,” a documentary about Franco mill workers in Brunswick and a winner in the Senior Division at the 2009 Maine Student Film and Video Festival. A senior at Brunswick High School, Christian is an avid historian who would like to combine his passion for history, drama and film when he attends college next year.

This event is open to the public. Tickets are available by calling The Theater Project at 729-8584. Suggested donation is $10, with all proceeds to benefit the Theater Project.
December 21, 22 / Al Miller and Company

The Theater Project's annual holiday treat WALES & TALES is back with a mix of winter stories and songs.

This year's WALES & TALES includes new and old holiday stories, poems and music. Al Miller will interpret Dylan Thomas' lyrical Christmas memory, "A Child's Christmas in Wales”, "A Cajun Night Before Christmas" (try almost hip hop) and be stuffed by young audience members portraying a variety of animals in "The Mitten." These are familiar fare for regular holiday celebrants at The Theater Project.

An ensemble of Young Company actors contribute "The Long Christmas Dinner", a Thornton Wilder piece that follows a New England family through ninety years of Christmases. The Young Company ensemble includes Christian Schneider, Emily Bowie, Emily Weddle, Meghan McGuire, Ben Keil, Julia Brown, Colin Grant and Rose Lortie.

WALES & TALES is suitable for the whole family. "A Child's Christmas in Wales", the longest piece in this pie, occurs in the second act, so families with very young children who may have had their fill at the end of Act I can easily exit for nap or snack time.

WALES & TALES will play on Monday, December 21 and Tuesday, December 22 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are a suggested $10, and are available by clicking the button above, calling 729-8584, or visiting the box office at 14 School Street in Brunswick.

The Theater will also be collecting donations of canned goods for the Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program.
February 27 / Al Miller & Phyllis Fuchs

Phyllis Fuchs joins Al Miller at The Theater Project to tell stories on Saturday, February 27 at 11:00 am. The storytelling is appropriate for families, children and "fans of Phyllis." Audience members can contribute to The Mid-Coast Hunger Prevention Program by bringing contributions of food to The Theater Project.

Phyllis Fuchs is a retired children's librarian who for decades read and told stories to youngsters in Brunswick at The Curtis Memorial Library. When she and Miller get together to offer stories to Mid-Coast families, many of the mothers and fathers remember coming to the Brunswick Library to hear stories when they were children.

Al Miller, The Theater Project's "Artistic Director Confit," often joined Phyllis at the library to act out the stories she read and told and occasionally to tell one himself. Since retiring from the library, Mrs. Fuchs has joined Miller annually for a community storytelling just before Christmas. "I couldn't imagine not doing stories with Phyllis after she retired," Miller said. "The Theater Project seemed the best place to continue the tradition. When we started, I think we had small audiences, but once people realized Phyllis was going to join me for a regular holiday gig, attendance picked up, and now we regularly get a good crowd."

Miller didn't want to limit the collaboration to Christmas so he's hoping the February 27th offering will be one of several collaborations that continue throughout the year.
Miller and Fuchs will tell stories for about forty-five minutes, Saturday, February 27th. Seating is open and no reservations are necessary. For information, call The Theater Project box office, 729-8584. The Theater Project is located at 14 School Street in Brunswick.
