April 9 - 11 / A Young People’s Theater Production
Every spring, junior high students gather at The Theater Project to create, rehearse and perform an original production. This March, actors in grades 6, 7 & 8 will present their own version of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid", under the direction of teacher Lee K. Paige.
The Theater Project's production classes begin with an introduction to improvisational techniques for making theater. These techniques are then applied to a story to create a production. At the end of six weeks, actors present a short production that is costumed and performed on a simple set. Students learn to work together, to take responsibility for their work, to problem solve, to use their imaginations creatively, and to take pride in their work. The emphasis is on process, but the product is so much fun! There is no greater thrill than seeing the faces of the young actors on opening night as they wait to take the stage for the first time.
Class registrations for "The Little Mermaid" are still being taken. The 6-week session begins March 1 and runs through April 11, with performances on April 9, 10 & 11. "Mermaid" will meet Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The class fee is $300, and limited financial aid is available.
