Director’s Notes
Middle class economic uncertainty and the subsequent decaying social fabric are concepts that are easily bandied about in the abstract, but what draws me to Detroit is how they are manifested on the most elemental level. For most of us, the desire to “stay afloat”, the fear of “sinking” gnaw at our psyches, affect our daily lives and the way we think about ourselves and those around us. In trying to cope, trying to “get by,” these two couples take very different approaches but are, I believe, ultimately united in their very human urges for happiness and well-being.
My thanks and gratitude to all the designers, technicians, stage crew, and especially to these fine actors who have imbued these characters with such humanity.
And my thanks to you for coming.
