Executive Director, The Theater Project

Position Description and Duties: 

The Theater Project (“the Theater”) seeks an experienced, self-directed, visionary, and  community-minded leader to serve as Executive Director (ED).  

The ED will report directly to the Board of Directors, and provide overall strategic,  operational, financial, and organizational leadership of The Theater Project, working  collaboratively with the Theater Manager, Box Office Manager, teaching artists, and  volunteers.  

The Executive Director will further advance The Theater Project's mission of creating  opportunities for people of all ages to engage in theater and community-based  educational programming. 

Responsibilities 

Leadership, Operations & Financial Management 

  • Serve as the Theater’s day-to-day leader, ensuring the smooth operation of all  programs, productions, classes, events, and administrative functions.

  • Manage the Theater’s finances, including budgeting, cash flow, financial  planning, taxes, and resource allocation, in partnership with the Board of  Directors and Finance Committee. Experience with Quickbooks is a plus.

  • Lead, supervise, support, and develop staff, instructors, volunteers, and contractors, fostering a collaborative and welcoming culture. 

  • Ensure the Theater building remains safe, functional, welcoming, and well maintained, coordinating repairs, maintenance projects, and facility  improvements as needed.

  • Balance long-term planning with hands-on problem solving, taking an active role  in addressing the day-to-day needs of a small nonprofit organization.

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to establish priorities, monitor  organizational health, and advance strategic goals. 

  • Maintain and steward the organization’s records and institutional knowledge, ensuring documents, files, archives, and other important information are  organized, preserved, and accessible to staff, board members, and others who  work with the theater.  

Fundraising & Revenue Development 

  • Lead fundraising and revenue-generation efforts to support organizational  sustainability, strategic initiatives, and debt reduction. 

  • Grow earned revenue and monitor enrollment, attendance, and audience  engagement through classes, performances, rentals, and other mission-aligned  activities. 

Programmatic & Artistic Leadership 

  • Develop and oversee the annual season of classes, productions, performances, and special events, balancing artistic goals, educational value, community interest, staffing capacity, and financial sustainability. 

  • Work collaboratively with instructors, directors, designers, and volunteers to  deliver high-quality educational and theatrical experiences. 

Community Engagement & Partnerships 

  • Recruit, engage, support, and recognize volunteers who contribute to productions, educational programs, fundraising, and organizational operations.

  • Foster meaningful relationships with alumni, patrons, funders, event committees, and other stakeholders in support of the Theater’s mission. 

Marketing & Communications 

  • Supervise and collaborate with the Theater Manager and support their oversight of the Theater Project’s social platforms and website. 

  • Manage Google Workspace, including shared Google Drive files and folders and the organization’s shared Google Calendar.  

  • Guide messaging and promotional materials across digital, print, web, and  community-facing platforms to strengthen the Theater’s visibility and reputation.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment 

This position requires the ability to work in a theater and office environment and to participate in activities associated with theater operations and productions. Duties may include sitting and standing for extended periods; walking throughout the theater and performance spaces; navigating stairs to access areas of the theater; using a computer and other office equipment; attending evening and weekend events; and occasionally lifting, carrying, or moving materials and equipment. Qualifications 

The ED will be thoroughly committed to the Theater’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship management experience.

The ideal candidate will bring many of the following qualities and qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience, preferably in a non-profit or educational setting 

  • Ability to coach, support, and develop staff and volunteer teams, with an emphasis on effective delegation  

  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and exercise sound judgment when working alone, including in an otherwise empty theater

  • Experience managing organizational operations, budgets, and strategic priorities.

  • Experience or a willingness to learn how to write grant proposals

  • Ability to lead with warmth, professionalism, and a collaborative approach

  • Passion for and commitment to the performing arts and arts education

  • Familiarity with legal and regulatory requirements for nonprofit organizations

  • Fundraising experience, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders  and actively grow the Theater’s network 

  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to build  positive relationships with staff, students, families, volunteers, and community partners 

  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, and a commitment to promoting equitable and inclusive practices 

  • A self-directed, adaptable, and resourceful approach to work, with a strong commitment to the Theater’s mission 

Compensation & Benefits 

The Executive Director position offers a $50,000 annual salary. At this time, the organization does not provide health insurance or a traditional employee benefits package. The position does, however, offer significant flexibility, including the ability to work remotely at times and set your own schedule in coordination with organizational needs.
