There's something about British wit. From "Monty Python" to "Beyond the Fringe," from "Spamalot" to "A Fish Called Wanda," from "The Goon Show" to John Cleese, the Brits are wits! This adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 thriller - maybe his first - "The 39 Steps" has been a hoot to work on that I hope results in many guffaws and hoots from the audience.
Who else but the Brits - and maybe Saturday Night Live - would put a train chase, an airplane crash, a long long drop into a river and several shootings on stage? And so our little stage becomes a world of Hitchcock surprises, acted masterfully by Andrew, Dana, Tom and Ross. They have been so good to work with, so willing to twist and turn and dive and flop and flirt and fly. I am grateful to all of them, and there are so many by the end of the play!
Thank you, Ryan, Jim and Danny for your design, sound, lighting and set pieces. Thank you, Maggie, for keeping us all in line as you stage managed rehearsals and are now running the show. Thank you, Wendy, for costuming and overseeing the production. And thank you Ian, Gabe and Kunya for your work back stage. It's mid-winter in Maine in an election year. We need some laughs. I hope you find them here.
